I went raw in August 2009 after reading a tiny blurb in a women’s magazine about digestive enzymes. I didn’t know it was a ‘movement’ or ‘hip’ or that there were raw foodists or celebrities eating raw, or ANYthing. In fact, I didn’t think much of it other than I knew my tummy could use some ‘correcting’. So I went beyond the article’s suggestion of 60-70% raw and just jumped in nearly 100%. It was the summer and I had tons of fresh fruit and veggies and within a couple of days I felt so different. Refreshed, energetic, happy.
I went online to try to learn more and discovered a whole WORLD of raw. WOW. I slowly began trying some raw food recipes and broadened my skills – sprouting anyone? I was reluctant to do the whole green smoothy thing, at first anyway. Eventually I did try my hand at them and they have been a STAPLE ever since. I drink anywhwere from 32-64 ounces a day. They vary depending on what is on hand, but for the most part consist of:
2-3 cups of water
2 or 3 heaping handfuls of spinach
juice of a lemon and/or orange
a banana (sometimes frozen first)
a small amount of stevia or agave
Alternatley I will add strawberries, carrot, zuccinni, sprouts, pineapple, apple, pear, fresh cranberries, maca, lucama, mesquite…etc etc. The list goes on and on and on in terms of what I may or may not add. It just depends on what I have on hand and what I feel like at any given time. Green smoothies are versatile and easy and so YUMMY!

Hi Angela! You really inspired me with your green monsters. I got really excited and went to the store to pick up some organic veggies. Surprisingly, this tasted like a tangy sweet kool-aid! I dont know if this would qualify as a green monster, but I wanted to share anyway since it was really delicious. I juiced a carrot, 2 cups of red kale, half of a pear, a whole apple, a whole lime, half of a red beet, and a serving of Greens Superfood powder. It was so yummy and I loved drinking it out of a fancy glass. I can’t wait to try more!
Thanks again for being such a positive inspiration and introducing a delicious way to incorporate so many nutrients into one glass every day!
Kind regards,
Karoline
I have been reading Oh She Glows for almost a year now, and have always read about Angela’s green monsters. To be honest they always sounded a little gross to me, haha, but with the new year I have been trying to embrace my healthy lifestyle change in a deeper, more meaningful way. Not just to lose weight and get skinny, but to really get healthy and love and appreciate my body.
And so I tried the green monster…. I have had one every morning for 2 and a half weeks now, and I am getting addicted! I am still experimenting a little to find different flavors I like, but the one I LOVE and keep going back to, is my chocolate strawberry shake!! It tastes to me just like a creamy chocolate-strawberry milkshake, and WAY too good to be healthy!
4 cups raw spinach
1 tbsp chia seeds
1/2 scoop chocolate whey protein powder
1-1 1/2 cups frozen strawberries
1/4-1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1 cup skim milk
1/2 cup cold water
The Motoamy Green Monster
This is my summer breakfast stand-by as well as a great recovery breakfast after a long night of ____ (insert escapade here). Recently I hosted a taco crawl in southeastern Connecticut and although I didn’t overdo it in terms of taco volume, I definitely ingested things my body was not used to, nor ever wants to ingest again.

On my trip to Singapore, I was experiencing green monster withdrawals; when will someone create a travel-sized non sharp blender? Maybe a green monster revolution where everyone sports “green monsters” like people now sport Starbucks? Until then….
Anyhow. My answer to the green monster absence was the following: a daily dose of coconut water from a fresh coconut and Green Monster beer from the Red Dot brewery. The Green Monster beer is infused with spirulina!
