IMG_6549That’s right, I am attempting to join the “Green Monster” movement.  I only say attempting, because I can’t guarantee I will always remember to make sure there is spinach left in the fridge for the next days shake, but I’m going to give it my very best effort.

What the heck is a Green Monster you ask?  Well, basically, it is your normal breakfast fruit shake, but add in 2 cups of fresh spinach and 1 tbsp of flax seed.  The movement was started by Angela from Oh She Glows, and she’s Canadian!

Today was day 3 of the Green Monster for me, and while I haven’t yet noticed a difference in my energy level or the appearance of my skin, I can rest a little easier knowing that 2 cups of dark leafy greens will only do me good.

Day One’s Green Monster recipe:

1 whole banana
1 cup frozen Strawberries
1 cup 1% milk
2 cups spinach
1 tbsp flax seed

Tossed it all into the ‘Magic Bullet’ and away we go!  Outcome, actually pretty tasty.  I have been altering the recipe a little each day, to find one that I really enjoy, and I am hoping to soon find one that actually LOOKS green, not a slightly reddish drink with green bits in it.

And then share your experiences and recipe’s with me, we’ll get green together!

3-6-10-167I have always enjoyed smoothies..they were generally only fruit based. I have recently discovered green monsters and have gotten hooked for life! They have boosted my iron levels, which were always low (enemia is no fun), my energies are also up..they are addictive! I love all the wonderful combinations of greens and fruits.
My most recent recipe, which is oh so yummy is this:

3 handfuls of spinach
5 strawberries
handful of grapes
one banana
ground flaxseeds
dash of Dulse
one kiwi
2 apples
water

I’ve just started adding the dulse..

fav-green-monsterHi Angela!

I’m a recent convert and must say thank you, thank you, thank you for creating these!

My favorite  Green Monster is:

1 frozen banana
1 scoop vanilla whey protein
1/4 cup berries (whatever is in the freezer)
1 tsp spirulina
1 tsp flax seed oil
~1 cup h20 or almond milk
*stevia to taste

LOVE IT! I’m currently working on my PhD in Biochemistry so I can’t really snack in between experiments. This combo keeps me full (and happy!) until lunch 🙂

022-GMHaving my own food/health blog has opened my eyes to so many new things, including Green Monsters. Of course I was a little wary at first – it’s a green smoothie after all – but now I understand what the rave is all about. Thanks to Angela and so many others for inspiring me to put nutrition at the top of the list for every meal.

This Green Monster is great as a post-workout meal and will stick to your ribs:

1 frozen banana
1 cup almond milk
1/4 cup rolled oats
1 T ground flax
1 cup fresh spinach

Here’s to health!

greenmonsterpuddingI’ve been drinking green monsters every day for a couple weeks now, and this morning I felt… Adventurous? So I decided to make a filling, vegan green monster. But I wasn’t paying attention to the proportions, and ended up with a delicious (albeit undrinkable) pudding-like result. It was fab! It also made it feel more like a “meal” to me, so I felt like I’d really eaten.

2-3 C of fresh baby spinach
2 Tbsp. plain hemp protein
1 Tbsp. ground flax seed
1 kiwi
1/2 medium avocado
1 large banana
1 C mango juice

I used a hand blender, and it turned into a light, soft pudding (custard?). Yum. I think it might work better with an actual blender, my little guy couldn’t quite demolish the kiwi seeds.

Blog-Pictures-2010-030Inspired by intuitive eating and listening to my body, I woke up this morning craving greens! Since I do not own a juicer, I figured i’d do second best and make my first green monster! I used what I had in my fridge and luckily it was absolutely delicious!

3 c chopped kale leaves
1/2 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
1.25 c Light Vanilla soymilk
5 strawberries
1/2 banana
5-6 cubes of ice

Blend for 2-3 minutes on the ice chop/food process setting and enjoy!

photoSurprisingly, this tasted like a tangy sweet kool-aid! I dont know if this would qualify as a green monster, but I wanted to share anyway since it was really delicious. I used a carrot, 2 cups of red kale, half of a pear, a whole apple, a whole lime, half of a red beet, and a serving of Greens Superfood powder. It was so yummy and I loved drinking it out of a fancy glass. I can’t wait to try more!

Thanks again for being such a positive inspiration and introducing a delicious way to incorporate so many nutrients into one glass every day!

Kind regards,
Karoline
