Sam’s Green Monster

Hey Angela!

I have been keeping up with Oh She Glows for a while now and have always wanted to try a Green Monster, but have been a bit hesitant. Well, I finally decided to take the plunge and I am so glad that I did! While nothing fancy, your Virgin Green Monster recipe had an ingredient list that I could easily handle and seemed like the perfect choice for a first time drinker. I followed your recommendation of two cups of spinach, one banana, one cup of milk, a tablespoon of flaxseed, and ice, and added a spoonful of natural peanut butter (I couldn’t resist!). It turned out amazing and I am officially hooked. Thank you so much for the inspiration and I look forward to experimenting with different recipes as I become more bold. Cheers!

Amber’s Green Monster:

For about a year and half I have started my day with green smoothies, or green monsters. I started this when I joined HappyFoody’s blog challenge Green for 30 days.

It was life changing and I am addicted. I am so happy to see the love of green monsters spread like wild fire through the blog world. I now feed my friends green smoothies and try to spread the green  love.

I like banana’s, berries, hemp or almond milk ,  frozen mangos and lots of spinach in my green monsters!

Aisha’s Green Monster:

I absolutely adore Green Monsters, I was extremely reluctant to try it, I thought it sounded weird and strange, so one day I had lots of spinach, no idea what to do with it, I could not eat it all in salad form by the time it went foul, so I thought I would try making a green monster, I only used milk, a banana and some spinach the first time, and I loved it. Unfortunately my family look at me like I am nuts, except my mum, she likes the GMs but will never actually make it herself. It has now become my breakfast of choice, and due to them, my skin is as soft as a baby’s butt. It is amazing, my nails are all hard and not weak, they don’t chip and they just grow and grow.

Now my usual recipe is 1 medium banana, about 4 cups of spinach, 250 ml of milk (I prefer the taste of goat’s milk but as I do not drink milk anymore, I use soy milk for the protein) and half an avocado, the avocado gives such a lovely creaminess to it. Recently I have started adding in Hemp powder, it does slightly taste like dirt, but I enjoy that. Also 1 serving of the hemp powder contains 40% of my RDA of iron which is amazingly good for me as I am anemic

Bonniejean’s Green Monster:

I Love Green Monsters!

I started making green monsters for breakfast just over a week ago and once or twice I put the leftovers in the fridge when I left for work.  My husband thought they were surprises for him, so now I make a point of making two each morning.  He loves them!

This morning’s monster:

Spinach
Milk
Cantaloupe
Blueberries
Strawberries
Peanut butter

p.s. I love the irony of drinking monsters out of pint glasses

Diana’s Green Monster:

I decided to try a green monster after seeing it time and time again on various blogs.

I’m pretty open minded when trying new food or recipes, and I love my greens so even the colour didn’t turn me off, but I was still pleasantly surprised.  No green aftertaste or anything!

So far I’ve only tried a basic recipe.  Honestly I like it so much I’m not sure I want to start adding in anything else!  My mix includes: 3c spinach, 1c unsweetened vanilla almond breeze, 1 banana, 1T protein powder, 3 ice cubes.  I start with the spinach and half of the almond breeze and blend like crazy.  Then I add the rest and blend until ice is crushed into the mix.

Thanks so much for putting this delicious idea out there!

(PS this isn’t my pic, it’s yours!  I don’t have a digital camera, but I don’t seem to be able to submit a story without a pic.)

Elizabeth’s Green Monster:

I can’t remember how I first started adding spinach into my smoothies.  I might have run across OSG and other websites simultaneously (Dr. Joel Fuhrman calls them “blended salads”) and it stopped seeming crazy to put greens in ma drank and started seeming logical.

I don’t like all fruit smoothies because I am hungry instantaneously after I finish them.  I don’t find that is the case with GMs. I am satisfied for a couple of hours after my GM. I also find that they are very cleansing — I need to hop off to the bathroom within about 15 minutes of drinking one in the morning.  For my girls who suffer from sluggish digestion, this is a good thing.

My morning smoothie is as follows:
First, 1 cup frozen strawberries and 1 frozen banana.
(freezing banana is KEY, I just realized it makes it taste sweeter)
Then, 1 cup cold water and 1 cup non-dairy milk (I have tried coconut milk, hemp milk, and almond milk.  Coconut milk obviously rocks, but I usually settle for almond milk for the taste and low calories).

I add 1 scoop Amazing Grass Green Super Food
1 tablespoon ground flax seed
4 drops vanilla stevia
and then I stuff the remaining space in the blender with fist fulls of spinach and/or kale.  I cram it in the remaining space.  The order of ingredients is very important because if I put frozen fruit on the top, it doesn’t blend as well.

Maria‘s Green Monster:

I’ve been drinking something similar to Angela’s beloved green monster for some time – under the alter-ego of “sweet green soup”. The whole lot gets dumped into a big white bowl and eaten as a chilled summery soup.

My usual:
1 frozen banana
1c unsweetened almond milk
6 handfuls organic baby spinach
either 1/4 avocado or 1 heaping glob of raw almond butter

When I have fresh pineapple, I freeze this and add it in. Sometimes I sub out the spinach for dinosaur kale. Often I’ll mix in chia seeds (for a more pudding-like soup) or garnish with raw coconut or berries.

Delicious! Thanks, Angela, for bringing us green-loving folks together to share the love. 🙂

I posted about my green moster here:  I really just started enjoying them, so no results to report yet, but it is a great way to use up the tons of greens that I receive each week in my CSA!
1 cup unsweetened vanilla Almond Breeze
1/2 scoop of chocolate whey protein
3 kale leaves (without the stem)
1 frozen banana
1 spoonful of Trader Joe’s Almond Butter
Ice
